Sukuta and Lamin Red Cross Links of West Coast Region Branch of The Gambia Red Cross society- recently concluded 6 days DRR training for 16 youth volunteers- held from 25-30 Dec. 2017 at Sukuta Upper and Senior Sec. School. 



The training was facilitated by Bubacarr Singhateh, the youth representative of WCR Red Cross, specialized in Disaster Management- who also doubles as the RFP for WCA HA WG of UNMGCY. 



The objective of this training was to:
- build the capacity of volunteers with the necessary skills and knowledge in the field of DM (DRR) 
- build community resilience through dissemination of DRR messages and training 
of communities 
- strengthen the already available capacity for effective response to disasters/emergencies 
- identify, analyze and communicate the hazards within communities for effective hazard mitigation and prevention where possible. 



The training covered the following areas:
1. Brief history of the Red Cross Movement 
2. Terminologies and concepts of DM
3. Presentations on Disaster Risk Reduction
4. Flood Preparedness
5. Risk and hazard mapping (field exercise)
6. Beneficiary identification and registration 
7. Beneficiaries targeting 
8. Relief Management
9. Code of conduct for Int'l NGOs, Red Cross and humanitarian organizations involved in humanitarian response
10. Gender-Based Violence in Humanitarian Settings


At the end of the training, the following outcomes were realized: 
- volunteers are now able to distinguish between a risk, hazard, disaster/emergency, and an event 
- also able to determine vulnerabilities, thus leading to community resilience 
- mapped out different hazards faced by the community
- developed an early warning indicator for the community to better prepare for flood events
- 16 volunteers trained in DRR and their general understanding of the volunteers on DM, DRR and GBV, widened.
